TWR: Albert Pujols to L.A, Tyson Chandler to New York and New NBA Free-Agent Signings

– 2-time NL MVP Albert Pujols has signed a 10-year, $254 million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Angels

Wow! What a monster deal for Pujols.

After spending his entire career in St. Louis and winning 2 World Series Championships, Albert will now move to the American League in hopes of duplicating that success in Los Angeles.

I never understood why teams shell out that kind of money over such a long period of time for players. $254 million dollars is an insane amount of money, but I suppose if any one player in the Majors deserves it, it is Albert Pujols. He has won the MVP award twice and finished in the top 5 voting 10 out of 11 years. He is a first ballot Hall-Of-Famer and arguably the best player in the entire league today.

Is 10 years a little long for a contract? Absolutely. Albert is 31 years old and will be playing now into his early forties. To be fair, he has had only 1 season in his career where he has hit less than .300, so if he can keep up that pace for another 8-10 years, then perhaps he will be worth the long-term investment. All that matters is whether or not he can bring championships to Los Angeles. This moves L.A to the fore-front of favorites to win the World Series next season. On top of Pujols, the Angels still have Vernon Wells, Howie Kendrick and Torii Hunter in the line-up, and they signed former Rangers ace C.J Wilson to add to an already stellar pitching staff of Weaver, Heren and Santana. The signing of Albert Pujols may be what puts this team over the top.

Albert Pujols gave the city of St. Louis 11 great seasons and 2 World Championships. Now with the departure of Albert and long-time Manager Tony La Russa, the Cardinals will never be the same again. He had every right to make this move, so no one in the city or the league can really scrutinize Pujols for his decision. Would you really turn down that kind of money?

– Former Dallas Maverick Center Tyson Chandler is nearing a four-year, $58 million dollar deal with the New York Knicks. In order to sign Chandler, the Knicks will have to amnesty Chauncey Billups and either trade him or waive him from the roster.

By signing Chandler, the Knicks would drastically improve in an area that many believed would have kept them from winning a Championship; Defense. Tyson is a big body in the middle who can block shots, clog up the interior and put up double-double numbers for your team. Maybe most important of all is that he brings championship experience to the Knicks after winning the title this past season in Dallas. On a team with Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, all Chandler will be really asked to do is play defense .

Unfortunately for veteran Point Guard Chauncey Billups, Chandlers arrival would seal his fate in New York, as the Knicks would not be able to afford him. Billups believed that New York would be the team he ends his career with, but that won’t be the case anymore. If amnestied, he could be claimed off of waivers by another team, but at this point in his career, Chauncey won’t play for just anybody. It is just another example of how players today have way to much say in where they play Basketball.

NBA Free Agent Signings – Former Memphis Grizzlies Forward Shane Battier has agreed in principle to a deal with the Miami Heat; Former Lakers Guard Shannon Brown has agreed to a 1-year, $3.5 million dollar deal with the Phoenix Suns; Former Pistons Guard Tracy McGrady has agreed to sign a 1-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks

– With James Jones uncertain to re-sign, and Mike Miller missing time due to injury, it was important for the Miami Heat to sign a forward like Shane Battier who can help spread the offense and nail the long-range three. Battier is an elite defender and one of the ultimate good-guys in the league. With Miami being one of the favorites to win the NBA Title this season, this will be Shane’s best chance to secure himself a ring.

– Tracy McGrady will never be the All-Star scoring machine that he was in the past, but he is a good addition for a Hawks team lacking veteran leadership. He can come off the bench and help spell some of the scoring load usually reserved for Jamal Crawford. Who knows, maybe he can get out of the 2nd round of the playoffs in Atlanta.

– Shannon Brown is the perfect addition for the Sun’s up-tempo running offense. He is a physical freak that will only excel in a system led by Point Guard Steve Nash. Taking a flyer on him for 1 year was a good move for the franchise.
